Corinthians extend lead

Published: July 21, 2011

Corinthians shook off the disappointment of their failed bid to sign Carlos Tevez by extending their advantage at the top of the Campeonato table with a 2-0 win at Botafogo . The Brazilian league leaders pulled out of their big-money move for Argentina striker Tevez earlier in the day but goals from Liedson and Paulinho in each half helped pushed the issue aside. Corinthians have now won nine of their opening 10 games to be seven points clear of Sao Paulo. Third-placed Flamengo played out a goalless draw at Palmeiras to remain a point ahead of their rivals, while Gremio ‘s trip to Figueirense also failed to produce a goal.
