Wigan ruins Chelsea’s perfect start

Published: September 28, 2009

Thanks to a lucky goal scored by Drogba, Chelsea has lost only by 3-1 the away game against Wigan Athletic.

Until winning against the Blues, Wigan has only lost against big Premier League teams.
Manchester United beat Wigan by 5-0 and Arsenal has defeated Wigan by 4-0.
It seems that Wigan Athletic players have had it with losing against teams that are fighting for the Premier League title.

After the last loss, against Arsenal, Wigan coach Roberto Martinez had the mission to keep team spirits high. Of course, all the credits for the win don’t go to Martinez.

35 League matches Wigan Athletic have waited to finally beat Chelsea again.
Wigan Athletic are now on the 10th place of the Premier League grid.

Thanks to the goal Drogba scored, he is now on the 2nd place in the Premier League Top Scorer grid.

This is Ancelotti’s first taste of Premier League defeat, but he thinks that this defeat only brought new motivation.

However, Ancelotti wasn’t pity and didn’t look for excuses after the loss. He realized that Chelsea didn’t play well, but he didn’t know what could have happened. Though, he said that this kind of things can happen after a lot of victories.
Ancelotti also was a good loser, as he declared that Wigan was better than Chelsea and that they played good football, as they were well organized.
For the penalty, Ancelotti has not blamed the Czech goalkeeper.

Against Wigan, Cech had been correctly showed the red card and so being motivated is a bit hard, as Chelsea’s worldclass goalkeeper will not be available for the next Premier League match, when the Blues receive the visit of Liverpool FC.
Though, Cech will play in the next match, when Chelsea are flying to Cyprus, to play an UEFA Champions League match against Apoel Nicosia.
