The biggest surprise of match day 3 In the Uefa Champions League was the game between AS Roma and FC Basel. Although everybody expected Roma to win with ease giving the late form of FC Basel and the advantage Roma had playing at home, the guests had other ideas
The Swiss showed they mean business from the start and scored on the 12 minute mark by international star Alexandre Frei with a beautiful shot from 14 meters which rendered Roman goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont useless. AS Roma – FC Basel 0-1. Alexandre Frei eventually won the “Man of the Match” award for this game.
Marco Borriello, AS Roma’s striker showed his teeth minutes later with a shot, but the score was still Roma 0 Basel 1 so, in the 21-st minute Italian captain Francesco Totti showed his class with a long range through pass that crossed half of the field and got to Marco Borriello who managed to score with his second shot of the game and draw the game at 1-1. Energized by the goal the Italians powered on and missed several important chances including two unfortunate shots by Totti.
Caught on counter attack AS Roma concedes again, with a similar shot. Inkoom was a touch too quick for Simone Perotta and placed the ball low past the helpless keeper. Basel lead by 2-1!
The Roman’s went all-attack after the break but the Swiss defense just wouldn’t crack. Taddei managed to be the author of the second half’s biggest miss hitting the far post from the right of the penalty area
The final score had yet to establish as, in the final minutes substitute Cabral had the final saying in this match. He forced his way through the tired Italian defense with a wonderful run to score the final goal of the match and take his squad level on points with Roma and CFR 1907 Cluj. Final score is 3-1 and the Swiss secure their first points in group E.
After this incredible match FC Basel secured their first group win in the Champions League since 2003 and Group E became a lot more exciting as the fight for the second place is not over yet.
