Following their encounter a fortnight ago at Anfield Road, a clash which ended in a Lyon win, along with Debreceni’s defeat at the hands of Fiorentina, the two teams’ managers will place a lot of importance on this particular match, although realistically they may not have the same expectations.

The home team are currently top of Champions’ League Group E, three points clear of Fiorentina and six ahead of their upcoming opponents, and are giving off a vibe of utmost confidence in their side winning the match against the Reds and, implicitly, securing qualification for the knockout stages.

The situation for the away side, however, is a completely different affair, as Liverpool’s disastrous form both domestically and on European level has not simply faltered, but it fell to a disastrous low. Losing six of the last seven matches for a club of Liverpool’s reputation is beyond unacceptable, as manager Rafa Benitez, not to mention fans, had been hoping of finally clinching the title this season, besides advancing as far as possible in Champions’ League knockout stages.

Although Lyon themselves have not impressed in recent games in the French league, they are still very much in the title race (just two points off leaders Bordeaux) and should regard Liverpool as nothing more than just an opponent against whom they must win to comfort fans and players alike with an early qualification.
